DETROIT – Special Agent in Charge David L. McCain of theBureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Detroit FieldDivision, and Special Agent in Charge Robert D. Foley III of the Federal Bureauof Investigation (FBI) Detroit Division announced today that each agency iscontributing $50,000 to the reward being offered for information leading to thearrest and conviction of the individual (s) responsible for the I-96 corridorshootings.
Since October 16, 2012 there have been 25 shootingincidents, with the most recent shootings occurring on Saturday October 27, 2012.Saturday’s shootings resulted in a non-life threatening injury to a man drivingeastbound on I-96 from the Kalamazoo area to attend the World Series game inDetroit. This is the first injury associated with the string of shootings.
In addition to the ATF and FBI reward, Crime Stoppers isoffering an additional $2,000 for information leading to the arrest andconviction of the individual (s) responsible for the shootings, bringing thetotal reward up to $102,000.
Special Agent in Charge McCain said “These senselessshootings must be stopped. This individual has no regard for public safety andis attempting to cause injury and fear to citizens that utilize I-96 on aneveryday basis. The danger and burden these shooting incidents place on ourcitizens is unacceptable. These shootings are now one of ATF’s Detroit FieldDivision’s top priorities. I have authorized additional personnel and resourcesto the task force, and we will continue to work with our local, county, stateand federal law enforcement partners to bring this individual (s) to justice”
FBI Special Agent in Charge Foley said, "The personor persons responsible for these random, violent shootings has demonstrated areckless disregard for human life. These acts of violence pose a serious threatthat is being answered by numerous law enforcement agencies including the FBI.The FBI continues to provide resources in order to facilitate apprehension andremains committed to supporting the task force. “The FBI is alsoputting forward $50,000 towards the reward, and together with ATF’scontribution, brings the total amount of the reward for information leading tothe arrest and conviction of the responsible person or persons to $102,000.00.All tips will remain confidential."
Clarence Goodlein, Director of the Wixom Police Departmentsaid “The posting of a cash reward, and its recent increase to $100,000 by theBureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Federal Bureau ofInvestigations are outstanding, and a demonstration of these agencies’commitment to law enforcement and communities. The assistance of these agencieswith our investigation of these shootings and their concern for the safety ofour residents and others across southeastern Michigan illustrates theirdedication to the principles of justice and public safety. I greatly appreciatethe assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives andthe Federal Bureau of Investigation, and their assignment of personnel andother assets to this investigation as well as the posting of this reward”.
These shooting incidents are being investigated jointly bythe Wixom Police Department, Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, Ingham CountySheriff’s Office, Livingston Sheriff’s Office, and Walled Lake PoliceDepartment, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Michigan State Police,ATF, USMS and the FBI.ATF, FBI and Crime Stoppers are seeking the public’sassistance in identifying the individuals responsible.
