A Prince George’s County Police homicide detective stopped aviolent assault and likely prevented a homicide.
On Saturday, December 8, 2012, at 10:30 pm, Detective MikeEbaugh was leaving the District III station at 7600 Barlowe Road in Palmer Parkwhen he heard what he calls a wail for help. Detective Ebaugh gotinto his car and rolled down all of the windows to follow the noise. Ashe approached the corner of Allendale Drive and Barlowe Road, he heard what hedescribes as metal hitting an object. Moments later, he witnessed thesuspect strike a nearly lifeless man with a shovel to the head. With notime to call for backup, Detective Ebaugh drew his handgun and ordered thesuspect to stop, just as the suspect was poised to hit the victim onceagain. The suspect complied with the detective’s orders andsurrendered. Detective Ebaugh called for backup and for emergency helpfor the victim.
The victim remains in the hospital this afternoon. The 48 year-old suspect, David Eugene Hamilton, of the 2000 blockof Ray Leonard Road in Palmer Park, is charged with first degree assault.
Detective Mike Ebaugh is an eight-year veteran of the PrinceGeorge’s County Police Department.
