The PrinceGeorge’s County Police Department is urging residents to never leave their carkeys in the ignition and then leave the running vehicle unattended. Thispractice is more common in the colder months, when drivers choose to leavetheir cars running to warm up. Auto theft is often a crime ofopportunity. The PGPD is currently investigating several jump-in thefts acrossthe county. In one district, police officers responded to 10 of thesethefts in a four-week period from early January to February 2013.
Leaving a vehicle unattendedwith keys in the ignition is against the law. Violators could be finedand receive a point toward his or her driving record.
