The Myth of the Self Made Millionaire

One day, Bob willed himself into existence. He emerged from nothingness in a deserted area on unclaimed land. As an infant, he fenced in his land within hours of birth. Over the first year of his life, he spent his days tilling the fields for crops, and at night he built himself a modest split-level home. As a toddler, he continued raising crops, and after making his own paper and ink would spend all day writing textbooks and all night homeschooling himself.By his teens he invented a self-service lemonade vending machine.  While others may have opened lemonade stands, Bob knew that doing so would allow others to see him.  His race, age, gender, or attractiveness might be a factor in his success, and wanting to achieve his dreams "on his own" he opted to create a machine to do the selling for him.He soon built a college where he taught himself all the lessons he needed to learn and earned both a bachelor's and MBA. He used the profits from his lemonade machine to create his own bank who then gave him the loan he needed to invest in creating a factory on his property which he ran himself, creating robots to do the work as he needed them. By the time he was 30 he was a millionaire, entirely self-made.
I wrote this story to highlight the absurdity of the self-made millionaire, and the ridiculousness of the notion that people can pull themselves up by their own bootstraps. That anyone can be successful without any help from anyone else.  No one ever stops to consider that someone else made the boots and the straps. There is NO such thing as a self made millionaire. Everyone had help from someone whether that was friends, family members, teachers, professors, employees, coworkers, or investors. Everyone has given circumstances that can be leveraged such as their age, their race, their attractiveness, social standing, or their gender ---even if they don't know they're leveraging them, or won't admit that they factor into their success. Nobody ever becomes rich on sheer will alone, there are always other people and a certain amount of luck and networking involved. Sure, you're not going to get very far if you rely on everyone else and have no drive on your own, but it's equally impossible to expect to be successful without any help from anyone else ever. You would have to be the only living person on the planet for that to be true.
