Prince George’s County Police officers hit the streets every day to serve the community and each month the department honors examples of this hard work.  We’d like to introduce you to the Officers of the Month for August.

DistrictI Police Officer of the Month

August2012PoliceOfficer Frank Digiovanni #3609
Police Officer Frank Digiovanni

On August 18th, 2012, a man reported to Officer Digiovanni that he had been robbed by two men at Chillum Road and Queenstown Drive in Hyattsville.  One suspect had asked if he could borrow the victim’s cell phone.  When the victim handed over his phone he was grabbed around his neck by a second suspect.  The suspects demanded money.  The victim told the suspects he didn’t have any cash.  That’s when one suspect hit the victim in the face with a closed fist and they ran away with his backpack.  Officer Digiovanni conducted an area canvass and observed two men matching the suspects’ descriptions.  Officer Digiovanni stopped both men.  During the course of the interview, Officer Digiovanni noticed one of the suspects was carrying the backpack that was taken from the victim.  The victim positively identified the suspects.  Due to his rapid response to the scene and the investigatory stop, the suspects were arrested and charged with armed robbery.

DistrictII Police Officer of the MonthAugust2012CorporalGregory Raynes #3125CorporalBertram Smith #3133
On August 22nd, 2012, Corporals Raynes and Smith observed a blue Chevy Tahoe failing to stop for a stop sign at Woodstream Court and Woodstream Drive.  As they attempted to stop the vehicle, it pulled to the curb, and a rear passenger bailed out. Corporals Raynes and Smith focused on the vehicle and the remaining two passengers. The corporals approached the vehicle and observed a small handgun in plain view on the rear seat.  Both passengers were removed and arrested.  Corporals Raynes and Smith recovered a loaded .380 Bersa Thunder and a .410 Mossberg shotgun. Due to their excellent restraint and sound judgment, two additional firearms are now off the streets of Prince George’s County.

DistrictIII Police Officer of the MonthAugust2012PoliceOfficer Marvin Ticas #3523
Police Officer Marvin Ticas

On August 13th, 2012, Officer Ticas conducted an area check at the Foot Locker store at Martin Luther King Avenue and Bellehaven Drive in Landover, because of prior robberies that occurred during tennis shoe releases.  Officer Ticas observed three suspects holding a group of citizens face down on the ground at gunpoint while rifling through their pockets and removing their personal items. When the suspects saw Officer Ticas’ marked police cruiser, they fled on foot.  Ticas caught one of the suspects after a brief chase. That suspect was positively identified by the victims. This crime could have easily had a violent ending, but due to Officer Ticas’ keen observation, attention to duty and quick actions in communicating with his squad, he was able to foil an armed robbery.

DistrictIV Police Officer of the MonthAugust2012PoliceOfficer David Gross #3594
Police Officer David Gross

On August 19th, 2012, Officer Gross conducted a premise check at a Budget Inn Motel in Temple Hills. He observed an unoccupied black Mercedes which matched the description given for recent purse thefts at gas stations throughout Prince George’s County. Officer Gross confirmed the car had been stolen. He spoke with the motel manager, who reviewed the video surveillance, which showed the occupants exit the vehicle and enter a hotel room. Officers responded to the room and could smell a strong odor of marijuana. One suspect attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended. During the vehicle impound, Officer Gross discovered several purses in the trunk. Due to his sound patrol techniques, Officer Gross was able to recover a stolen vehicle, a small amount of narcotics and make two arrests. This arrest alone led to the successful closure of six incidents involving purse thefts.

DistrictV Police Officer of the MonthAugust2012PoliceOfficer Matthew Hansen #3549PoliceOfficer Joseph Polnac #3630
Police Officer Matthew Hansen

Police Officer Joseph Polnac

On August 25th, 2012, Officer Hansen and Officer Polnac were dispatched to the High’s Convenience Store for a report of a suspicious person. When they arrived, they saw a man standing outside of the store. A warrant check was conducted with negative results and the man was sent on his way. Once inside the convenience store, Officers Hansen and Polnac observed the store clerk and another man standing side by side. The store clerk discreetly gestured that the man had a gun. After observing this, Officer Hansen and Officer Polnac attempted to place the suspect into custody. The suspect began to resist arrest. Officer Hansen and Officer Polnac managed to gain control of the suspect and place him under arrest. Further investigation revealed that the first man outside the store was the lookout person while the robbery was taking place. He was later arrested a short distance away. As a result of their investigative skills and decisive actions, two robbery suspects were apprehended.

DistrictVI Police Officer of the MonthAugust2012PoliceOfficer First Class Fredys Castro-Rivas #3162
Police Officer First Class Fredys Castro-Rivas

On August 6th, 2012, while working secondary employment at the Value Village Thrift Store in Lewisdale, Officer Castro-Rivas was approached by a frightened father who said he had lost sight of his eight year-old daughter in the store. Officer Castro-Rivas searched the store for the child, with no luck. He advised Public Safety Communications of the situation and broadcast a look out for the child. Officer Castro-Rivas and the father then began to search the neighborhood. A short time later, the officer observed the missing girl holding hands with an unknown adult male in a neighborhood park. As Officer Castro-Rivas approached the two, the missing child pulled away and ran shouting for her father. During the course of the investigation, Officer Castro-Rivas learned the suspect had lured the child from the store and had intentions to sexually assault her. The suspect was arrested. Thanks to Officer Castro-Rivas’ quick response and sound tactics, an innocent child was safely returned to her father.

PGPD Takes Part in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Initiative

To contact us Click HERE

On Saturday, September 29th, from 10:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M., the Prince George’s County Police Department, along with the Drug Enforcement Administration (D.E.A.) and the United States Department of Justice (USDOJ), will be collecting potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction.

The Prince George’s County Police Department will have three collection points. Members of the Community Services Division will be on hand to assist.   This collection service is free and anonymous.

  • District I Station at 5000 Rhode Island Avenue in Hyattsville
  • District III Station at 7600 Barlowe Road in Palmer Park
  • District IV Station at 5135 Indian Head Highway in Oxon Hill

The Prescription Drug Take-Back Initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  The DEA cites studies which show a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, often from a home medicine cabinet.  In addition, many citizens do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards.

10 Reasons Why You Can't Have A "Straight Pride" Parade

To contact us Click HERE
(please note that some links may direct to stories and or pictures that could be disturbing to some readers)

10. Straight: Never A Slur
Nobody goes around saying "That's so straight" or "That's so hetero". You do not have the word for your sexuality used as a slur or synonym for "lame". On top of not having to deal with this offensive bullshit, you also don't get people trying to shame you for speaking up about it by using rationalizations, "I didn't mean gay people!" or offering non-apologies "I'm sorry if anyone was offended".

9. Straights Not Bullied
There are no straight children being bullied for being straight (or presumed to be straight) to the point where they kill themselves. You don't have people objecting to anti-bullying campaigns claiming it's "straight indoctrination" or "recruiting for the straight lifestyle" or "the straight agenda".
8. Straight People Kiss Openly In Public
You can walk down the street holding hands with your partner, you can even indulge in some G-rated PDA without people calling you perverts, or trying to maim or kill you for expressing affection for your sweetheart.
7. Straights Not Abused/Murdered/Harassed for Being Straight(mostly)
You don't have anyone burning down your home, vandalizing your car, or business with hateful language like "KILL ALL GAYS NOW" or "FAGGS SUCK DICK". The FBI's 2010 report on hate crimes shows that out of 1,528 victims of hate crimes based on their sexuality, only 22 were targeted for being heterosexual, whereas 98.5% of victims were targeted for being LGB. You don't have people putting up stickers around your neighborhood declaring it a "straight free zone".
6. Straights Not Target of Horrific Attacks
People don't attack straight people, unprovoked, at a party, call them nasty straight slurs, stab them with beer bottles, and then throw them on a fire. Nobody burns straight people to death for being straight and then leaves their body on the side of the road. Nobody kills a straight person for being straight and then blames it on their straightness, or uses a strategy known as the The "Gay Panic" Defense to blame the victim for his or her own murder.
5. Being Straight is Legal EVERYWHERE
There are no countries anywhere that are considering making being straight a crime, or passing a bill that would apply the death penalty for homosexuals and a seven years jail sentence to anyone guilty for not reporting to the authority about the gay activities in their respective communities..
4. Being Straight is Considered Normal
No one ever says that being straight is abnormal, sick, perverted, a mental illness, an addiction, a crutch, an offense to god, a "dangerous lifestyle", a danger to children, marriage, and country or says straight people should be killed, deported, or forcibly converted away from their "lifestyle". You don't have nurses telling you, in regards to your depression, "The reason you are so upset is because you feel the darkness surrounding you, and you feel guilty about being a homosexual", saying that you are "depressed because you are living in sin"
3. Ex-Straight Doesn't Exist
There are no ex-straight camps, industries, support groups, or conferences touting how you can "change" and there are certainly no ex-straight groups who get involved in social policy.
2. Straights Not Shamed for Objecting to Ridicule
You don't have comedians making horrible jokes about killing their children for being straight, and then when there is an outcry, other people rushing in to say that anyone who disagrees is trying to "shut down" the speaker or suggesting that freedom of speech means freedom from responsibility or consequences.
1. Nobody Tries to Vote Against Being Straight
The value of your relationship to your spouse, and the civil recognition of your relationship has never come up for a vote.
People who talk about "Straight Pride" parades don't seem to get WHY there are gay pride parades in the first place. Gay Pride Parades are a reaction to the shame put upon us, they started as political protests and in many respects and in many areas STILL ARE. In Croatia and Russia, for example, gay pride parade marchers have been attacked with stones, bottles, bricks, cigarette lighters, and other objects or had local religious leaders encourage beatings. Gay people are brutally murdered every day from the oppression heaped upon us by uncaring, compassionless, hateful bigots. I would GLADLY, easily, PROUDLY give up gay pride parades and events if I could get full, civil, federal, state, and local equality. It is because we do NOT have these things that we march every year.

EPILOGUE:
Even when you plan, promote, and organize a Straight Pride Parade. Nobody shows up. Enhanced by Zemanta

A Myth About Not Voting

English: Ballot Box showing preferential voting
Image via Wikipedia
Once upon a time, there was a citizen named Julie. Julie was reading about the candidates, and while she agreed with certain things from Candidate Bob and not much from Candidate Norm, she felt that since she didn't agree 100% with Candidate Bob, she would not vote for anyone this year.
And on Election Day, when all was said and done, and Candidate Norm had won, The Great Voter Council sat in their chamber, feeling the psychic energy from all the non-voters. "Peggy was sick today!" said a council member. "Joey was fed up with the system and didn't vote!" said another.  "Really, neither did Julie! Or Sammy! Or Kelly! Or Mary! Or Bobby! Or Gary! My goodness!" said another council member.  The Chairman of the Great Voter Council stepped forward and said "I think it's clear, my fellow council members. With so many people staying home today, they have sent a message! We have felt their psychic energy, which tells us who has not voted and why, and we now know what we must do! We must fix the system!  To the horses!" and the council got on their horses, and road off to Washington, to fix everything.

When you don't vote, nobody knows why you didn't vote.  There is no difference between Julie who didn't vote because she's fed up and Peggy who had the flu. Nobody's tracking who didn't vote. There is no minimum number of voters needed. So the fewer people vote, the fewer people are making decisions. If the only person who votes in the election is Tim, then the rest of us are just Tim's bitches.

There are times when abstaining sends a message. Where silence speaks louder than words.  This is NOT one of those times.  This is one of those times where someone who is absent on Election Day on principle is the same as someone who was in a coma. As far as the candidates and government are concerned, you're the same as the guy who forgot to vote. About the only thing the candidates hope, is that your non-vote works in their favor. You haven't just opted not to speak, you've opted not to be relevant. You're not smarter than the rest of us, you're just pickier.

Nobody's required to vote, but the only message you're sending on Election Day when you don't vote is this:

" "

We Need Money

To contact us Click HERE
Art is necessary. It's how we cope with life, it's how we innovate, it's how we entertain ourselves, and it helps us talk about issues, or discover new possibilities, or figure out the complexities of love, faith, sex, you name it -art has something to say about it that can change the world. I believe that.
I make art with hubris productions a non-profit theatre company in Chicago. We've been lucky enough to not need a grant, corporate sponsorship, or a rich benefactor. We've been able to make it all happen for the past 5 years on ticket sales and donations from a few friends, family members, and our board of directors. With the economy the way it is, even that's not quite enough now.
Here's what we DON'T DO:We don't have any employees. We are ALL volunteers. Everyone is employed by someone else and works for us part time, for free. None of us are rich, there's nobody buying yachts. Nobody's moving money into offshore bank accounts. Every last bit of money, every single penny pays for performance/rehearsal space rental, very expensive royalties, the posters and postcards we use to advertise our shows, filing official forms with the government, insurance in case we maim an audience member, and a small amount does pay outside help like actors and designers ---but at most, someone might be paid enough to pay 1/4 of a month's rent in Chicago.

We recycle our sets, props, costumes, and furniture.
If we don't think we'll use it again, we sell it, usually at our annual yard sale. That money goes back into the company, of course. Company members often use their own clothes, furniture, and other property. It's not unusual for people to buy their own props, or pay for other things without being reimbursed.
SO the money you donate to us won't be helping someone take a fancy vacation, it's helping us pay our bills, pay off credit cards, pay for scripts, rent a space, and in a few cases pay an individual a modest stipend that might cover one or two of their own bills one month.
We've got 20 days left and a lot left to reach our goal. Even 5 bucks would help.  Even 1 dollar would help. Thanks for your consideration, the widget below will take you to our page (and a fun video!) at indiegogo.com

A Note on Christians

To contact us Click HERE

I don't hate Christians. My family is Catholic and several of the nicest, sweetest, and most open minded people I know are Christians. I know some very nice Christians who have defended me as a gay person. So no, I do not hate Christians.
HOWEVER. Not all Christians are swell people. Some of them, unfortunately, harbor a great deal of bigotry. You may see me mention some of those types of Christians from time to time. Now, whenever I write about those types of Christians, I put in a great deal of effort to not lumb them in with all Christians.  For example, you may see me use phrases like:

  • Some Christians"
  • "These Christians"
  • "Anti-Gay Christians"
  • "Many Christians"

But you won't see things like:

  • "All Christians"
  • "Every Christian"
  • "Christians always say..."
The modifiers "some", "these" and "anti-gay" are intential modifiers. They're not accidental, they're not coincidental. They are intentional, used to denote that I am talking about specific sub-populations, specific types of Christians, NOT every Christian, not all Christians.
Now, despite the fact that I make the effort to use modifiers like "some" or "these", people see the word "Christians" and accuse me of painting with a broad brush. I get accused of "hating Christians" or "attacking Christians" all the time, despite the fact that I put in this effort to be fair.
I'll be honest, I'm not going to put a disclaimer on my blogs every time I talk about religion. The modifiers SHOULD be good enough. I'll put a hyperlink to this particular blog, but I'm not going to put out a lengthy warning. I'm not a drug company, and if people can't recognize when a modifier is used, and that the use of modifiers like "some", "many" or "these" or "anti-gay" explicitly means I'm NOT painting with a broad brush, they can go fly a kite. Not every kite, not all kites, A kite.

You may not see me mention the good things that Christians do. Since the USA was founded, we as a culture have assumed Christians are good, honest people. That belief still persists today. Don't believe me? Ask an atheist how they get treated. The assumption in this country is that Christian = Good. So I don't feel compelled to counter every bad example with something good. I'm not a journalist, and I don't claim to be. I'm highlighting problem cases, people! Examples of bad bad things that bad bad people do. It doesn't make me a unfair person, or the bad bad people any less bad if I don't talk about how awesome they are at cake decorating. Criticizing one of my posts because I "never" say anything nice about Christians doesn't address the article, it's a distraction, a character attack, the logical fallacy known as an Ad-Hominem attack.

I know not all Christians are the same, or bad people, or anti-gay. I'm not the one who needs to hear that, you know who needs to hear that? Bad Christians. Anti-gay Christians. Why? Because they need to hear from you, not me, that you're nothing like them. They need to hear that they do not represent YOU or YOUR beliefs. They're under the impression they speak for you, and I'm not the one who told them they could do that. Good Christians don't seem to be willing or able to stand up and tell these Bad Christians "You don't speak for me". Which reminds me of a famous quote:
"All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing" - Tolstoy

Views Don't Deserve Respect, People Do.

To contact us Click HERE
I see this popping up a lot. "We need to respect other people's views" or "we need to respect other people's opinions". No, we really don't. PEOPLE deserve respect. The fact that they have the right to an opinion or belief deserves a certain amount of respect. But the opinion, view itself?  No.  Someone can have respectable views, but giving out respect for any opinion as a default is a really bad idea.I'm gay, in case that has somehow slipped by you. And people have presented me, often, with the "view", "belief", or "opinion" that I should be:
  • jailed
  • executed
  • castrated
  • forced into therapy to make me straight
  • restricted from being around children
  • restricted from certain careers like teaching, public office, the military, and even medicine
  • restricted from government recognition of my marriage
I don't respect any single one of those views. Every single one of those views is disrespectful of me as a human being. None are compassionate, have any empathy for me, or give any consideration to me whatsoever. I don't particularly care where or how someone arrives at these views, the end result is the same regardless of motive. I don't think it's even remotely fair or helpful to give respect to ideas, views, or beliefs that have as their basis a complete lack of respect, empathy, or compassion for you. Which is why I don't think we should start with the default that all views deserve respect.
Do the people who have these views or beliefs deserve respect?  YES, all humans deserve a basic level of respect!
Should we respect the fact that people have a right to their views and beliefs? Absolutely! However, respecting the view itself leads to a lot of abuses. For example, when challenging someone on one of these views I have often been told I am disrespecting someone's beliefs or religion. Yes, by saying "No I really don't think I should be executed for being gay" I am somehow disrespecting someone's beliefs. Let that roll around in your head for a second.

People define "disrespect" for their beliefs with challenging the belief, critiquing it, disagreeing with it, pointing out flaws, inconsistencies, or falsehoods, having a government that doesn't enforce those beliefs, and yes, even not following those beliefs yourself (in some situations).

Think about the fictitious "War On Christmas". People say their religion is being disrespected and persecuted if someone says "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas". People think that letting gay people get married is disrespectful to religions that find being gay to be immoral. If we were to apply this fairly throughout society, we would have to respect the views of vegans by banning the sale of meat and animal products like honey. To respect certain other "deeply held" beliefs, we'd have to take away minority and women's voting rights. I know, you're saying "But you can disagree with someone's beliefs and still respect those beliefs!" Not according to a lot of people with strong restrictive beliefs. They can't seem to handle critique, discussion, or disagreement without claiming victimhood and persecution. They're allowed to talk, but you're only allowed to listen. I saw beliefs are only worthy of respect if those beliefs themselves are respectful. I'm not interested in giving respect to beliefs if they do not respect me.Don't let the good impulse to be fair and civil to people lead you to giving up your voice in the discussion. "Respecting" someone else's beliefs immediately gives them the upper hand and when the belief itself is not respectful of others, you've got nowhere to go without being called "disrespectful".
We should respect them as people
But whether or not their beliefs deserve respect is up for debate. It is, indeed, often the very heart of the debate, and it depends a lot on how respectful those beliefs are of other people and their humanity. Enhanced by Zemanta
