Art is necessary. It's how we cope with life, it's how we innovate, it's how we entertain ourselves, and it helps us talk about issues, or discover new possibilities, or figure out the complexities of love, faith, sex, you name it -art has something to say about it that can change the world. I believe that.
I make art with hubris productions a non-profit theatre company in Chicago. We've been lucky enough to not need a grant, corporate sponsorship, or a rich benefactor. We've been able to make it all happen for the past 5 years on ticket sales and donations from a few friends, family members, and our board of directors. With the economy the way it is, even that's not quite enough now. 
Here's what we DON'T DO:We don't have any employees. We are ALL volunteers. Everyone is employed by someone else and works for us part time, for free. None of us are rich, there's nobody buying yachts. Nobody's moving money into offshore bank accounts. Every last bit of money, every single penny pays for performance/rehearsal space rental, very expensive royalties, the posters and postcards we use to advertise our shows, filing official forms with the government, insurance in case we maim an audience member, and a small amount does pay outside help like actors and designers ---but at most, someone might be paid enough to pay 1/4 of a month's rent in Chicago. 

We recycle our sets, props, costumes, and furniture.
If we don't think we'll use it again, we sell it, usually at our annual yard sale. That money goes back into the company, of course. Company members often use their own clothes, furniture, and other property. It's not unusual for people to buy their own props, or pay for other things without being reimbursed. 
SO the money you donate to us won't be helping someone take a fancy vacation, it's helping us pay our bills, pay off credit cards, pay for scripts, rent a space, and in a few cases pay an individual a modest stipend that might cover one or two of their own bills one month.
