A Note on Christians

I don't hate Christians. My family is Catholic and several of the nicest, sweetest, and most open minded people I know are Christians. I know some very nice Christians who have defended me as a gay person. So no, I do not hate Christians.
HOWEVER. Not all Christians are swell people. Some of them, unfortunately, harbor a great deal of bigotry. You may see me mention some of those types of Christians from time to time. Now, whenever I write about those types of Christians, I put in a great deal of effort to not lumb them in with all Christians.  For example, you may see me use phrases like:

  • Some Christians"
  • "These Christians"
  • "Anti-Gay Christians"
  • "Many Christians"

But you won't see things like:

  • "All Christians"
  • "Every Christian"
  • "Christians always say..."
The modifiers "some", "these" and "anti-gay" are intential modifiers. They're not accidental, they're not coincidental. They are intentional, used to denote that I am talking about specific sub-populations, specific types of Christians, NOT every Christian, not all Christians.
Now, despite the fact that I make the effort to use modifiers like "some" or "these", people see the word "Christians" and accuse me of painting with a broad brush. I get accused of "hating Christians" or "attacking Christians" all the time, despite the fact that I put in this effort to be fair.
I'll be honest, I'm not going to put a disclaimer on my blogs every time I talk about religion. The modifiers SHOULD be good enough. I'll put a hyperlink to this particular blog, but I'm not going to put out a lengthy warning. I'm not a drug company, and if people can't recognize when a modifier is used, and that the use of modifiers like "some", "many" or "these" or "anti-gay" explicitly means I'm NOT painting with a broad brush, they can go fly a kite. Not every kite, not all kites, A kite.

You may not see me mention the good things that Christians do. Since the USA was founded, we as a culture have assumed Christians are good, honest people. That belief still persists today. Don't believe me? Ask an atheist how they get treated. The assumption in this country is that Christian = Good. So I don't feel compelled to counter every bad example with something good. I'm not a journalist, and I don't claim to be. I'm highlighting problem cases, people! Examples of bad bad things that bad bad people do. It doesn't make me a unfair person, or the bad bad people any less bad if I don't talk about how awesome they are at cake decorating. Criticizing one of my posts because I "never" say anything nice about Christians doesn't address the article, it's a distraction, a character attack, the logical fallacy known as an Ad-Hominem attack.

I know not all Christians are the same, or bad people, or anti-gay. I'm not the one who needs to hear that, you know who needs to hear that? Bad Christians. Anti-gay Christians. Why? Because they need to hear from you, not me, that you're nothing like them. They need to hear that they do not represent YOU or YOUR beliefs. They're under the impression they speak for you, and I'm not the one who told them they could do that. Good Christians don't seem to be willing or able to stand up and tell these Bad Christians "You don't speak for me". Which reminds me of a famous quote:
"All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing" - Tolstoy
