DC New 52 - Favorites So Far...

Meant to do this forever ago, but, well, you know, life is like that.

The best thing about the New 52 is that I can jump into these stories, these books, without having to worry too much about lengthy backstories and all the twists and turns these characters have taken over the past decades.  Here are my favorites.:

Stormwatch - Gotta say, my first time through that first issue, I really had no idea what the heck was going on. Some of the powers seemed lame, a girl who does physics based on current science (if something turns out to not exist or be true, her powers change), a guy who talks to the avatar of a city, a girl who can hear and manipulate media on a global scale ---- but I kept with it because, well, there's a gay couple in it, or two gay men who are supposed to become a couple at some point, and I wanted to see how that developed. I'm glad, I did because the premise, and the wacky powers grew on me quickly and the story is just weird enough for me that it works.

Wonder Woman - Brutal. Violent. Weird. Greek gods as crazy, moody, skinny, and unearthly looking beings. So far, so good.

Aquaman - Let's just get this out in the open. The Superfriends badly mishandled a lot of things (the Wonder Twins, the stupid junior scooby-doo knock-off sidekicks) and Aquaman was one of them. In the new 52 Aquaman is a badass. He's not completely useless on land. Think about it, to survive at the bottom of the ocean you'd be crushed if you didn't have super strength, stamina, etc. His wife, Mera, is no slouch herself. It's neat to see a husband/wife team in a comic book and not have their relationship be the point of conflict.

Green Lantern: New Guardians - More weird alien stuff. More about the different lantern corps'. Good so far.

Batwoman - Another LGBT character. But, so far I like this. If you know me at all, I'm completely over Batman. But so far Batwoman hasn't given me anything to be too concerned about. Haven't delved into her backstory much, but we'll see.

Justice League Dark - Weird, mystical, dark. So far, nice. Deadman is a bit annoying, but everyone else so far is interesting.

Justice League - So far, good, but they're still forming the team. Once they're all together, I may not stick around, but it's cool to see how it all comes together.

Flash - Grifter - Red Lanterns - Superboy - These are all good enough for another shot, but I'm on the fence.

NO THANK YOU  - Frankenstein - Justice League International - Green Lantern Corps - I tried these out. Frank had an interesting premise that just was too badly drawn and managed for me to care. Justice League International was just plain silly, and I didn't care about any of the heroes, all of whom seemed to be knockoffs of better characters from somewhere else. Green Lantern Corps, enh, the two they featured weren't all that interesting.

Overall, I'm glad that DC did this reboot of their characters. I was never a DC person. Just found a lot of the characters to be lame. Batman and Superman especially. I liked them as kids, sure, but Superman is a God, so I can't identify with him, He has one weakness, and that's it. Batman has ridiculous Mommy & Daddy issues, that just come across as unbelievable to me. Really, after 10-20 years you're still fixated on your parents murder? Sure, miss them, yes, but still haunted by losing them so much that it drives your daily vigilante activities? I know, superheroes in general require a lot of suspension of disbelief, but at the very least you could say that Batman and Superman have been just completely played out for me.
So it was neat to see how some of these characters I don't know as well are starting out. Also neat to see the merger of DC's universe with the one from Image's WildCats books.  Grifter and Stormwatch are from the WildCats books.
It looks like Marvel will be doing something similar in their own universe sometime in the next couple months, so perhaps I can find my way back into the X-men or perhaps give the Avengers or someone like Doctor Strange a go. We'll see.
